Brown, Jill and Carol Gilligan. Meeting at the Crossroads: Women's Psychology and Girls' Development. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University, Press, 1992.
The authors report on a study of listening to girls' voices over a period of five years. They argue that girls reach an impasse at the "crossroads of adolescence" when they are in danger of losing voice and experiencing a "series of disconnections" between "psyche and body, voice and desire, thoughts and feelings, self and relationship."
