Job Description for Editor of Young Adult Library Services

Term of office: 3 years

  • Sets the scope and tone of the journal both textually and pictorially.
  • Manages editorial office, writes editorials and coordinates the referee process
  • Aggressively encourages the submission of high-quality articles according to current activities and interests of the field and maintains and develops positive relationships with authors and potential authors
  • Edits copy (including rewriting, reorganizing and validating information and related operations)
  • Provides input to YALSA staff about plans for future issues, so they can arrange for covers
  • Provides input to the advertising sales representative about plans for future issues
  • Works with the advertising sales representative to maximize revenues from ads
  • Works with YALSA Staff and ALA Production Services to determine schedules for publication
  • Manages the work of column editors and reviewers
  • Works with YALSA staff to determine organization news to be included
  • Prepares copy for publication by planning the table of contents, writing introductory notes, identifying text to be highlighted, determines placement of photos and illustrations, etc.
  • Secures copyright as necessary for feature articles
  • Provides copy in both paper and electronic formats to the YALSA office and ALA Production Services for two issues a year
  • Reviews galleys and page proofs for both first and second passes
  • Answers questions and inquiries about the journal
  • Works with the Publications Committee and trains them to serve as referees
  • Communicates with ALA Production Services, YALSA staff, and the YALSA Board of Directors, as needed
  • Performs other duties as needed
