ALA Spectrum Program
The American Library Association is committed to a vision of America’s libraries which reflects the rich diversity of the American people. ALA created Spectrum to help achieve this vision. Spectrum’s mission is to "improve service at the local level through the development of a representative workforce that reflects the communities served by all libraries." Established in 1997, Spectrum is ALA's national diversity and recruitment effort designed to address the specific issue of under-representation of critically needed ethnic librarians within the profession while serving as a model for ways to bring attention to larger diversity issues in the future.
Spectrum supports students of American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander descent in their goals of becoming a librarian by providing scholarships, leadership training, mentoring and professional development opportunities to a number of eligible candidates each year.
Your contributions to building the Spectrum endowment to a level where it can sustain scholarships into perpetuity sends a powerful message that librarians and libraries care about diversity, education and equal access to information for all. For Spectrum to achieve its goal, we need the support of many who are committed to the future of libraries and the vital roles they play. To make a gift to Spectrum, send your check payable to the Spectrum Fund, ALA Development Office, 50 East Huron Street, Chicago, IL, 60611. Or, click here to make an online credit card contribution.
