2008 Marshall Cavendish Scholarship recipient named

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) has named Maile Claire McGrew-Frede, Dixon, N.M., the 2008 recipient of the Marshall Cavendish Scholarship.

The $3,000 scholarship was established with a donation from the Marshall Cavendish Corporation in Tarrytown, N.Y., publishers of illustrated reference books for libraries. It is awarded to a person pursuing a master’s degree in library and information studies.

McGrew-Frede’s interest in the field of library and information science grew from her time at a small rural library in New Mexico. “Two and a half years, and a steep learning curve later, I can honestly say I never had a job that has been more rewarding,” said McGrew-Frede.

During her tenure, she implemented full cataloging of the library for the first time in the library’s 15-year history. She initiated several outreach programs, doubling its visitation statistics. She also re-activated a dormant coalition of non-profit libraries, which has successfully garnered operating funds from the state level for the first time in New Mexico’s history.

She plans to bring to the profession her commitment to the special role rural libraries play; supporting literacy and education, focusing community planning and furthering economic development.

McGrew-Frede will attend the University of Arizona.
