PLA Leadership Fellows Program

The Public Library Association (PLA) is dedicated to providing our members with educational opportunities that will help them become leaders in public libraries and excel in their careers. PLA's newest scholarship program, PLA Leadership Fellows, offers PLA members who are public library managers a chance to attend executive leadership training at some of the best universities in the United States:

Selecting a Program

Each executive leadership program varies in length, as well as scope and focus. In addition, program dates and application processes are unique to each school and program. We recommend that you first carefully review each program to determine which one is right for you.

How To Apply

Members interested in applying to be a PLA Leadership Fellow, must first send their application to the PLA office. Applications for each school are available below. Once PLA has reviewed your application, it will be forwarded on to school of your choice. Please note: Each school has a separate application. You may only choose to apply to one program.

Who Should Apply?

Candidates must be PLA members who are management staff in a public library system with a minimum of five years experience in a leadership role. While each program has its own specific criteria for acceptance, generally candidates are identified as those who demonstrate leadership potential.

Why Apply?

PLA is dedicated to extending unique learning opportunities to members who want to broaden their perspectives, improve their leadership skills, drive change in their institutions, and plan with a strategic vision. These programs focus on applying management concepts generally learned in a business school setting, but these skills are vital for our public library leaders to understand in order to move their organizations forward. Most programs draw participants from various disciplines in government, non-profit, and the private sector, allowing you to network with and learn from individuals who have different perspectives and experiences.

Learning Outcomes

PLA Leadership Fellows are required to submit a written report following the completion of their executive leadership program. The report should detail their experience and how they will utilize the skills they learned in their current positions. Fellows will also be asked to present their report to the PLA Board at either the ALA Midwinter or Annual Conference.

Additional Information

Award eligibility: Application is available only to PLA Members. PLA Members are eligible to apply to more than one program, however, only one award will be made per PLA Member. Awards will be made based on the timetable for each program. Final award determination will be made by the PLA Leadership Taskforce.

The PLA Leadership Fellows program will cover the cost of tuition to each program. Most meals are included by each program as part of the tuition. Housing for all programs is included by each institution as part of the covered tuition.

Transportation: It will be the awardees responsibility for the round trip transportation costs for their program. Transportation costs are not covered as part of the award.

Meals: Most meals are provided as part of each of these programs. (Check each institutions specific program description for details).

Housing: Housing is included by each institution as part of the tuition.
