Hundreds of libraries and bookstores throughout the country will participate in Teen Read Week 2004. Please note that the following list of events is not a complete inventory of participating schools, libraries or bookstores. For information regarding "It's Alive! @ your library" events taking place in your area, please contact your local library or bookstore.


Connecticut

The Ridgefield Library in Ridgefield, CT
The Ridgefield Library will host "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" during Teen Read Week. Middle School students are invited to come to the library, meet a local forensics detective, and learn how clues left at a crime scene, such as fingerprints and blood drops, help the police catch the bad guys.

Illinois

The Des Plaines Public Library (Ill.)
The library will celebrate Teen Read Week with two free "B" movie nights for teens. An Alfred Hitchcock classic inspired by the Daphne du Maurier short story, "The Birds," will be shown from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20. From 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, the film is a thriller based on a story by science fiction writer John W. Campbell, Jr. about a bloodthirsty humanoid that terrorizes servicemen in Antarctica. Light refreshments will be served. The films are made possible through a license agreement funded by the Friends of the Library.

Downers Grove Public Library (Downers Grove, Ill.)
Downers Grove students are invited the Downers Grove Public Library for a program to celebrate Teen Read Week on Friday, October 22 at 4 p.m. in the library's Meeting Room. The program is based on the show Fear Factor, in which teens can competitively compete to test their gross-out skills with games and more! Teens will also be able to cast their vote for the ALA's Teens Top Ten awards of the year.

Lake Villa District Library (Lake Villa, Ill.)
Hair Raisers--Storyteller Linda Gorham. Sunday, October 17, 2:45PM
Nationally awarded storyteller, Linda Gorham will present a witches' brew of spine-tingling stories. "Ghosts, Shivers and Screams" will include stories that will run shivers down your spine and cause the hair on the back of your neck to rise. All are welcome to attend. Hey Teens! In honor of Teen Read Week---It's Alive-- check out Hair Raisers---it will be a ghostly good time.

Rock Island Public Library (Rock Island,  Ill.) 
Quad City Area Public Libraries are sponsoring an "It's Alive! Teen Reading Challenge," Oct. 17-30.
Ten libraries in the Eastern Iowa/Western Illinois are challenging students in the 6th through 12th grades to read as many minutes as possible, with prizes for 250, 500, 750 or 1,000 minutes of reading. Events include a kick-off party on October 15 at the Davenport Public Library, Davenport, Iowa; teen "read-ins" on Oct. 21 at various locations; and a final party on Nov. 5th at the Rock Island Public Library, Rock Island, Ill. The wrap-up event will feature bingo, trivia, and reading challenge award presentations.

Kentucky

Boyd County Public Library, Kentucky
Boyd County Public Library is hosting two "It's Alive" parties for local teens during Teen Read Week. The event, held at the Main and Summit branches, will include a costume contest, food, games and prizes. Teens are asked to come dressed as their favorite monster from a book or movie.

Maryland

Enoch Pratt Free Library (Baltimore, Md.)
Enoch Pratt Free Library will host an "It's Alive" Film Fest.
Students will kick-off the week with a horror movie marathon including short and feature length classics. The week continues with films. The highlight of the celebration will be a talk about the process of creating and publishing a graphic novel by Jonathon Scott Fuqua and artist Steven Parke, creators of graphic novel, In the Shadow of Edgar Allan Poe. An average of 100 students are expected to participate.


Michigan

Public Libraries of Saginaw (Saginaw, Mich.)
The Public Libraries of Saginaw is celebrating It's Alive @ your library in all five branches during Teen Read Week.
Teen Read Week Open Houses will feature horror displays and a "Name the Monster" contest. Teens will get goody bags, door prizes, and a chance to chat with a local DJ during a radio station's "live remote" at one of the branches. Refreshments will be served. To participate, all teens need is a library card. About 100 teens are expected to attend.

New Hampshire

Gilford Public Library (Gilford, NH)
The Gilford Public Library will host an "All You Can Read Buffet" during Teen Read Week. Registered teens will check in at 6:00pm and be served pizza and drinks at 6:15pm. The reading portion of the meal begins at 6:30pm and ends at 8:30pm. Everyone who makes it to the end of the buffet line will be treated to sundaes and a prize raffle at the end of the evening. An average of 30 teens are expected to participate.

New York

Baldwinsville Public Library (New York, NY)
It's Alive: Operation Slither Creepies and crawlies and long legged beasties and things that go bump in the sunshine.

Meet some of Mother Nature's cold-blooded children as we kick off our Teen Read Week celebration with a visit from Diana Sleiertin of the Upstate Herpetological Association at 2 p.m. October 17. Diana is the chief cook and lizard washer for Maxman's Reptile Rescue an organization dedicated to educating the public about snakes, lizards and other reptiles. She will be accompanied by some of her scaly friends including Sebastian a five foot thirty pound White Throated Monitor Lizard, a seven foot boa constrictor, a ball python and a variety of other reptiles. Join us for her presentation where you can get up close and personal with our reptilian friends as well as learn the rules for their proper care and housing.


Ohio

Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County (Adena, Ohio)
Earn Your Library Wings Read For The Fun Of It! Chicken Wing Contest
Earn points for your class every time you visit the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County October 1-25. Fill out a form at the library and return it to the checkout counter. The library assistant will initial it and keep the form. If your classroom earns the most amount of points, you'll win a chicken wing party from Domino's Pizza of Steubenville. How To Earn Points: register for a library card-15 points; check out books, CDs and other library materials- 10 points; and use the library's Internet computers- 5 points.

Fantasy Writing Workshop
October 16, 2-3:15 p.m., for grades 5-8.
Dia Calhoun, award-winning fantasy author of Firegold, Aria of the Sea, and White Midnight, will present a writing workshop, using elements of a fantasy story-magic portal, magic objects, magic helpers, villains, quests, familiars, and the return. At the end of the workshop, participants will have created the beginning of a fantasy story of their own. Ms. Calhoun's books will be available for purchase and signing. Sponsored by the Friends of the Aberdeen Timberland Library.

Long after you're gone, your gravestone will remind people that you lived. This program will allow you to create your own headstone and epitaph-the words for the headstone. What could be creepier?
