Public Awareness Committee (standing)
History: Established by Council on recommendation of the Committee on Organization in June, 1989. As a result of Council action taken at the 1995 Annual Conference, the name of this committee has been changed to the Public Awareness Committee. The member make-up remains the same. To consist of ten members, inculding a chair and two or more representatives of national media/communications organizations.
Charge: To develop programs that promote libraries and library issues nationwide. To assist ALA members in promoting their libraries at the local, state, and national levels. To work closely with the ALA Public Information Office, and ALA Officers, committees and units in developing and coordinating promotional and marketing programs and tools for libraries, librarians and ALA, including National Library Week and other national campaigns focused on the continuing support of libraries.
Subcommittees of the Public Awareness Committee shall be appointed by the committee’s chair and currently consist of the Arthur Curley Memorial Lecture Subcommittee, Library Advocacy Now! Subcommittee, National Library Week Subcommittee, PR Assembly and Taskforce on Advocacy Institutes.
