Student Chapter News and Resources

Check this page for news and events related to the Student Chapter Groups. For more information on any of the topics, please contact the Chapter Relations Office at 800-545-2433, ext. 2429, or cro@ala.org.

Student-to-Staff Program

Each year during Annual Conference, the Chapter Relations Office assembles 40 representatives from the student chapters to assist ALA staff at the conference. To qualify, the student must be a current ALA member and a member of a student chapter, and cannot have previously participated in the program. Although each school has its own selection process (i.e. random drawing, essay contest, etc.), the chosen student's name must be submitted to ALA by the group's faculty advisor. One student will be accepted per chapter. In exchange for working 4 hours per day at the conference, the student will receive free conference registration, housing, and a per diem for meal expenses. Transportation costs (such as airfare and cabs) are the student's responsibility. This program is only available at the Annual Conference. At this time there are no volunteer opportunities at Midwinter Meetings.

Information about the program is sent to the schools each year in early December, and the deadline for submitting a name is February 1. Because there is only room for 40 students and there are currently 49 active student chapters, participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Student Chapter E-list

The Chapter Relations Office created an e-list, STUCHAPT, for members of ALA student chapter groups and their faculty advisors. The purpose of the list is to allow students to connect with other chapters and exchange information regarding chapter activities, events, and other ideas. It will also be used by the Chapter Relations Office to keep in closer contact with the students and better serve them. To subscribe, please contact Don Wood.

See also the Facebook page American Library Association Student Chapters.

Student Chapter Speaker List

The Chapter Relations Office has compiled a Student Chapter Speaker List (by State), a directory of library professionals who can be contacted to speak locally to Student Chapter groups. If you know someone who would like to be added to this list, or if you are looking for a speaker on a particular topic, please contact Don Wood.

Reimbursement for Student Chapter Programs

Did you know that your student chapter group can be reimbursed for up to $100 per fiscal year for programs and events it holds? All you need to do is send your receipts to the ALA Chapter Relations Office at 50 E. Huron St., Chicago IL 60611 with a letter requesting the reimbursement and to whom it should be sent. We do ask that if possible, receipts are sent together rather than smaller requests throughout the year.

National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is a national accrediting body for schools, colleges, and departments of education authorized by the U.S. Department of Education. NCATE determines which schools, colleges, and departments of education meet rigorous national standards in preparing teachers and other school specialists for the classroom. The American Library Association and the American Association of School Libraries were pleased at recent interest expressed by students and faculty at a number of schools in forming ALA Student Chapters to foster professional affiliation. As a result ALA has expanded its Student Chapter program so that NCATE-accredited programs can establish ALA Student Chapters.
