Position Description: Editor, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL)

ITAL is published quarterly and is the official refereed journal of LITA.  Although ITAL has been a traditional paper‑based publication, there is strong interest in continuing to grow the electronic presence of the journal and explore ways to accept electronic submission of manuscripts.

Responsibilities

1.      The editor assumes final authority for the content of each issue of ITAL.  Responsible exercise of that authority requires definition of and adherence to standards and scope for ITAL.

2.      The editor is responsible for meeting publication deadlines as agreed with ALA Production Services.

3.      The editor is responsible for the timely acknowledgement of manuscripts and then assignment to a member of the Editorial Board for editorial review.  Upon receiving comments and a recommendation from the double blind referee (neither the author nor the referee is told the identify of the other), the editor decides what will be published and in which issue, or asks the author to resubmit revised copy if appropriate.

4.      Upon acceptance, the editor is responsible for securing a machine‑readable copy of manuscripts and any associated artwork, or if necessary,
camera‑ready artwork.

5.      The editor will also evaluate new technologies to facilitate the acquisition and distribution of manuscripts and information, and will work with LITA to implement new methodologies.

6.      The editor appoints and works closely with the ITAL Managing Editor, who is responsible for resolving queries during the production process.

7.      The editor attends the LITA Publications Committee meetings at Midwinter and ALA Annual Conferences, and reports on ITAL activities.

Required

*       Must be a current LITA member and knowledgeable about current issues in library automation, information technology and networking.

*       Must have a publication record or background, which demonstrates excellent writing skills, recognized scholarship in the field.

*       Must have substantial editorial experience.

*       Must be able to attend ALA Annual and ALA Midwinter to chair the ITAL editorial board meetings.

Desired

*       Experience in electronic publishing and networked information

Benefits

Although there is no pay associated with the position, the person will receive a stipend of $1500/year or will be reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses up to $1500/year, and receive free press registration for attending the ALA Midwinter meeting and Annual Conference.  No reimbursement is provided for other LITA programs or if the editor is unable to fulfill stated responsibilities.
