Karen G. Schneider works in research and development at
College Center for Library Automation, a network serving Florida's 28 community
college libraries. Her library career path includes two stints as a systems
librarian, directorships in small public and small special libraries,
children's library services, adult reference services, adjunct instruction at
two library schools, and running a one-person Internet training business. Karen
has published over 100 magazine articles, most related to library science, many
as the Internet Librarian columnist for American Libraries, and most recently
as a columnist for the ALA Techsource blog. She has also published two books,
most notably A Practical Guide to Internet Filters (Neal Schuman, 1997). She
has been an active participant on four ALA presidential task forces
(Outsourcing, Electronic Participation, Electronic Meetings, and Member
Participation) and has twice chaired state chapter Intellectual Freedom
Committees (New York, 2000; California, 2002-2004). She is a co-founder of the
LITA Blogging and Wikis Interest Group (BIGWIG). She is a frequent speaker at library conferences and maintains a personal blog, Free Range Librarian.
