LITA Heads of Library Technology (HoLT) Meeting
ALA Annual Conference
June 29, 2008 - Anaheim, California

Introductions and Announcements

The meeting was called to order by Chair Michelle Robertson. We had a full room of people – approximately 25. In fact, we had to request more chairs to seat everybody. We went around the room and everybody introduced themselves – their name, institution, major concerns. We had a good diversity of people from a variety of types of libraries around the country.

LITA & HoLT Business

We elected Mark Stoffan from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as the incoming Vice-Chair.
  • Richard Wayne (Vice-Chair) gave a brief recap of the HoLT program from the day before on “Transformational Change: The Evolving Role of Library IT Departments.” The program was attended by approximately 180 people and was presented by Robin Hastings, Carole Kiehl, and Terry Nikkel.
  • Sue Thompson (former Chair) gave a brief recap of the book that is being published by Neal Schuman. The book is titled Core Technology Competencies for Librarians and Library Staff. It was the result of a HoLT program two years ago and is being written by those program presenters plus some other HoLT members.
  • HoLT meeting time – Michelle expressed that the Sunday morning time seems to work well. However, we need two hours as opposed to an hour and a half.
  • Discussion/program topics list – We will discuss this list offline.

HoLTalk

This discussion time was the main part of our meeting. We picked up the topic of Information Commons (IC) from mid-winter. A sample of discussion items:
  • IC furniture issues
  • Group versus individual spaces
  • Library as place still very important
The next topic related to the library web site having a common look and feel as the campus web site. This topic may become our program for Annual 2009.

Program Ideas

We discussed several options for future program ideas. Mark Stoffan and Michelle Robertson will present an idea to the programming committee on Monday afternoon related to developing library websites within campus templates and rules.

Adjournment.
