The Law and Political Science Section (LPSS) was formed in 1975 and is a section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, which is a division of the American Library Association. The purpose of LPSS is to serve as an educational forum and information exchange for librarians with an interest or subject expertise in law or political science. Our activities include producing literature guides and resource reviews as well as sponsoring conference programs, discussion groups, a newsletter, and listserv. We welcome interested librarians to join our efforts.

Call for Nominations: Marta Lange/CQ Press Award

This annual award recognizes an academic or law librarian who, through research, service to the profession, or other creative activity, makes distinguished contributions to bibliography and information service in law or political science. This award honors Marta Lange, 1990-91 Law and Political Science Sections chair, whose exceptional talents as a leader were enhanced by a wonderful collegial spirit. The award is sponsored by CQ Press.

Nominees should have achieved distinction in one or more of the following areas:

  • Planning and implementation of a model bibliography/information services program in a law or political science library
  • History of contributions to the field through research, publications and other activities displaying active participation in the advancement of law/political science librarianship
  • Service to the profession through ACRL or related regional and national organizations
  • Promotion or development of an education program for law and political science librarianship that has served as a model for other courses and programs.
Electronic submissions are required. Nominations should include a letter of nomination including the name, address, and phone number of both the nominating party and the nominee as well as a narrative supporting the nomination, and a current vita. Individuals may nominate themselves or others.

Deadline for submissions is Dec. 5, 2008. E-mail the nomination documentation to the Award committee chair, Leslie Homzie, Boston College.

For additional information, contact Homzie or Megan Griffin.

Political Science Research Competency Guidelines

The ACRL Board approved the Political Science Research Competency Guidelines on Sunday, June 29, 2008!

Kathi Fountain noted that "this document has been five years in the making, and this is a huge accomplishment for our section. We have created a tailored, discipline-specific set of standards and interpreted them in a very practical manner.

Many thanks go to the Education Task Force members: Barbara Norelli, Lorena O'English, Bruce Pencek, John Hernandez, Rebecca Ohm, Chris Palazzolo, and Connie Stoner. Thanks is also due to non-task force members who contributed to examples, attended focus groups (in the form of ALA Discussion Groups), and met with faculty on their campuses and at APSA conferences. The approval of this document is a testament to your collaboration. Thank you very, very much.

In the next couple of weeks, I will be blending the approved text with our "repository of examples" into one document within the LPSS wiki. This will allow our members to add examples independently and ensure that the guidelines remain relevant and current. It will truly keep it a 'living document.'"

The Guidelines are available as a .pdf file and as a Wiki.

ACRL Council of Liaisons application

At the 2008 ALA Midwinter Conference, the LPSS Executive Committee approved a motion to submit an application to the ACRL Council of Liaisons to establish a formal liaison with the American Political Science Association. Drafts of the application and the history of LPSS' relationship with APSA are available for your review (application and history).
