Emerging Technology Interest Group Minutes Conference 2004
Annual Conference 2004
Orlando,
Florida
At ALA Annual Orlando, the IG put on a well-attended program entitled "The Radio Frequency Revolution: Tips and Trends for Implementing RFID Systems in Libraries." The program consisted of a panel of three librarians and concluded with comments from seven vendors on the future of RFID for libraries. Program materials will be posted on the IG web site.
We have also re-structured the operating principles of the IG. We have formed a functional alliance with the Top Technology Trends Committee, which will act as a first scan of emerging technologies and trends that the IG can consider for developing into programs. The IG will also serve as a place (especially virtually, through our listserv) where discussions that are sparked by the Top Tech programs can receive more extensive discussion and analysis. Reccomendations from Top Tech will be put before the IG for discussion at election time, and officers will be elected
based on the topic that rises to the top for development into a program.
We are planning one program for ALA Annual 2005. on the topic of online training environments for staff. We will also be co-sponsoring a program on the Shibboleth project with Open Source Systems IG for Annual 2005. We will be holding our usual business meeting and discussion at Midwinter Boston. Our discussion there will be shaped by
recommendations submitted to the Interest Group by the Top Technology Trends Committee.
Because of the IG program at this conference, this meeting was a brief business meeting with core members to determine immediate actions needed on our future activities.
