Events at 2008 ALA Annual in Anaheim:
  • And Now for the Good News: Appreciative Inquiry
    • Program will present an overview of appreciative inquiry, the study and exploration of what gives life to human systems when they function at their best. This approach to organizational change is based on the assumption that questions and dialogue about strengths, successes, values, hopes and dreams are themselves transformational. It offers a positive way to engage library staff in assessment. Although this method had its inception in the health care industry, this program will demonstrate its relevance to continuous improvement in libraries.
    • Speakers: Diane Graves, University Librarian, Trinity University Library, San Antonio, TX; Gene Spencer, CIO, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA; Lisabeth Chabot, College Librarian, Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY

Handouts:
Exercise #1 - QUESTIONS FOR AN APPRECIATIVE INTERVIEW (pdf)
Exercise #2 – Introduction to an APPRECIATIVE INTERVIEW process (pdf)
PowerPoint: And Now for the Good News: Appreciative Inquiry
  • Living the Balanced Scorecard
    • Preconference program will let participants learn to apply the three broad strategies of Balanced Scorecard (BSC): customer intimacy, operational excellence and innovative services. Beginning with an overview of theory and practice of BSC, and followed by case study work in small groups, participants will work with data sets from academic and public libraries, and will leave with the knowledge and skills needed to implement BSC in their own libraries.
