With so many career paths in libraries, the educational requirements vary a good deal from job to job.  This page provides links to more information on library degrees and certifications.  If you need help deciding which path is right for you, visit librarycareers.org. 

• Credentialed Librarians
  A Master's degree from an ALA-accredited Library and Information Studies program prepares you for a professional career in library and information science. The majority of employers require an ALA-accredited Master’s for professional positions. ALA accreditation indicates that the program meets the ALA Standards for Accreditation of Master’s Programs in Library and Information Studies. ALA accreditation is not a "rubber stamp." There is considerable variation among ALA-accredited programs. Prospective students are encouraged to contact programs directly for specific information.

• Credentialed Librarians in Schools
  If you are interested in working as a school library media specialist (in elementary, middle, or high school libraries), also known as school librarian or teacher-librarian in some states, you have two options for obtaining your professional degree:

  • you can pursue a master's degree from a program accredited by ALA, or 
  • you can pursue a master's degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
  • Scholarships for ALA-Accredited Master's Programs and ALA-recognized NCATE School Library Media programs
