Spectrum - Mentoring & Networks

Since ALA's establishment of Spectrum in 1997 to address the specific issue of underrepresentation of critically needed ethnic librarians within the profession, the program has received tremendous support from a number of libraries, library schools and organizations across the country.  Thank you to the following institutions and associations for helping Spectrum to provide an extraordinary continuum of care to its scholarship recipients.

Matching Funds

The following library schools and regional library associations have provided additional financial support to Spectrum recipients within their program (listed by state):

Alabama

• University of Alabama provides out of state tuition waivers to Spectrum recipients.  Recipients: Deborah Lilton (2005). Match Available!

Arizona

• University of Arizona has provided out of state tuition waivers.  Recipients: Michael Gutierrez (1999), Eowyn Gonzales-Mesa (2000), Mary Jane Pettman (2000).

California

• University of California, Los Angeles provides all Spectrum recipients with a matching scholarship, typically in the form of a UCLA Graduate Division Scholarship.  Recipients: Brent Singleton (1998), Jennie Seo (1998), Todd Honma (2001), Chungsil Kim (2001), E. Chisa Uyeki (2001), Guadalupe Leyva (2002), Don Pinanong (2002), Laura Ward (2002), Michael Baradi (2003), Yolanda Alaniz (2004), Vi Ha (2004), Monique Marie Escamilla (2005), Gregory Alan-Kingman Hom (2005), Alice Pin-Lan Ko (2005), Brenda Marisol Linares (2005), Candice Anne Mack (2005), Han Ngoc Nguyen (2005). Match determined annually pending availability of funds.

Connecticut

• The New England Library Association provides an additional scholarship (up to $2500 per recipient) for all Spectrum Scholars attending schools in the New England states. Recipients: Alicia Antone (1998), Michelle Baildon (2002), Erica Dean Glenn (2002), Maria Bey Pontillas (2002), Nova Seals (2002), Jessica Langlois (2003), Soran Pan (2003), Vernica Downey (2004), Lana Thelen (2005). Match Available!

District of Columbia

• Catholic University of America provides one Spectrum recipient with a matching $5,000 scholarship.  Recipients: Michelle Hammond (2005). Match Available!

Florida

• Florida State University provides a tuition waiver (in-state or out-of-state) for the term of the scholarship award to any Spectrum Scholarship recipient who pursues a Master's degree in library and information studies at Florida State University. On campus recipients will also be offered a graduate assistantship for the term of the scholarship award.  Recipients: Sonia Alcantara (2004), Ricardo Antoni (2005), Lesly Galiana (2005), Melody Ingrid Royster (2005), Beatrice Skokan (2005). • University of South Florida provides an assistantship and tuition remission to Spectrum recipients. Recipients: Aryanez Albuquerque (2005), Karen Annmarie Gordon (2005), Michelle Pantoja McKinney (2005), Margaret Siatafu Reid-Leach (2005), Grisel Torralbas (2005). Match Available!
• The Floriday Library Association has offered a $2,000 supplemental scholarship to Spectrum Scholars attending either of Florida's graduate library schools.

Georgia

• Clark Atlanta University (program closed) offered matching $5,000 scholarships for up to two Spectrum recipients attending CAU each year. 

Illinois

• Dominican University provides up to two Spectrum Scholars a year with a matching $5,000 scholarship.  Recipients:  Ida Martinez (1999), Carmen Markham (2001), Nicholas Saunders (2001), Robert Vega (2002), Alanna Aiko Moore (2003). Match Available!
• University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign provides a full tuition and service fee waiver to all Spectrum Scholars. Recipients: Jeffrey Gima (1998), Keshia Garnett (1999), Quintel Freeman (1999). Match Available!
• The Illinois Library Association selects one Illinois Spectrum Scholar each year to receive an additional $500 scholarship.  Recipients: Alanna Aiko Moore (2003), Patrice Johnson (2004). Match Available!

Indiana

• Indiana University provides six credit hours of eligible tuition remission to Spectrum recipients.  Additional aid may be available.  Recipients: Tahirah Akbar-Williams (2003). Match Available!

Massachusetts

• Simmons College provides a matching $5,000 scholarship to Spectrum Scholars each year.  Recipients: Michelle Baildon (2002), Erica Dean Glenn (2002), Maria Bey Pontillas (2002), Nova Seals (2002), Vernica Downey (2004). Match Available!
• The New England Library Association provides an additional scholarship (up to $500 per recipient) for all Spectrum Scholars attending schools in the New England states. Michigan

• University of Michigan double matches the $5,000 Spectrum award for any Spectrum Scholar.  This award can exceed $10,000 and can be used over the course of the student's four terms of study in the program.  Recipients: Martin Knott (2000), Alexandra Rivera-Rule (2001), Josue Hurtado (2002), Zahra Langford (2003), Carrie Sawyer (2004). • Wayne State University has provided an additional scholarship of $750 to enrolled Spectrum Scholars. Recipients: Elisia Johnson (2002).
• The Michigan Library Association has offered a $500 grant to Spectrum recipients attending Michigan schools contingent on two years of post-graduate employment within the state.

Mississippi

• University of Southern Mississippi has provided tuition waivers to Spectrum recipients.  Recipients: Mantra Henderson (1998), Jama Lumumba (1998).

Missouri

• University of Missouri - Columbia offers up to a $5,000 matching scholarship for Spectrum Scholars. Recipients:  Juliette Douglas (20050, Brandy Sanchez (2005). Match Available!

New Jersey

• Rutgers offers a matching scholarship to up to two Spectrum Scholars per year.  If only one recipient attends Rutgers, available funds may be combined to offer a scholarship of greater monetary value.  Recipients: Lisa Dunkley (1998), Kassundra Miller (2001), Angela Cortez (2003). Match Available!

New York

• Long Island University offers a matching $5,000 scholarship for up to two Spectrum Scholars per year. Match Available!
• Syracuse University provides a 12 credit hour tuition waiver for all Spectrum Scholars.  Recipients: Morna Hilderbrand (2002). Match Available!
• University at Buffalo provides a $5,000 match to up to five scholars per year.  Recipients: Gwen Collier (1998), Sandra Courtney (1998), Barbara Hellen-Hill (1998), Miriam Perez (1998), Nykia Perez (1998), Christine Porschet (1998), Kathy Leezin Wu (1998), Lee McQueen (1999), Daisy Waters (1999), Sandra Blackman (2003). Match Available!

Oklahoma

• University of Oklahoma offers a $5,000 match to one Spectrum Scholar a year. Match Available!

Pennsylvania

• Drexel University has offered a $5,000 matching scholarship to up to three Spectrum Scholars a year.
• University of Pittsburgh provides a financial aid grant to all Spectrum recipients, and graduate student assistanships may be available for full-time, oncampus recipients.  Recipients: Maria Carpenter (1999), Patricia Clark (2000), Annisha Jeffries (2000), Ximena Miranda (2000), Sharon Vaughan (2000), Tamika Maddox (2001), Rekesha Spellman (2002), Dominic Matthews (2002), Randi Robinson (2004), Kimberly Gales (2005), Douglas Lyles (2005), Vani Natarajan (2005), Elisabeth Rodriguez (2005), Neely Tang (2005). Rhode Island

• The New England Library Association provides an additional scholarship (up to $500 per recipient) for all Spectrum Scholars attending schools in the New England states. Tennessee

• University of Tennessee has offered a $2,000 scholarship to up to two Spectrum recipients a year.

Texas

• The University of North Texas provides a $1,000 scholarship to all Spectrum recipients, as well as out-of-state tuition waivers when applicable.  Recipients: Veronica Inez Arellano (2005), Tanya Brown (2005), Maria Lucia Hernandez (2005),Yunn-Hwa Li (2005), Tezeno Lynnette Roberson (2005), Joel Thornton (2005). • The Texas Library Association provides a $2,000 matching scholarship to Spectrum Scholars attending Texas schools, scholarship acceptance requires recipients to work in Texas for two years following graduation.  Recipients:  Myra Brown (1998), Amy Gonzalez Ferguson (2001), Maribel Garza (2002), Kimberly Gay (2003), Analiza Perez (2004), Elizabeth Rush (2004). Match Available!

Washington

• University of Washington has provided a $2,500 matching scholarship to Spectrum recipients.  Recipients: Glenda Claborne (2003), Amy Harper (2003), Nghi Lam (2005). Match Available!

Wisconsin

• University of Wisconsin - Madison provides a matching scholarship for Spectrum recipients.  Recipients: G. Salim Mohammed (2005). Match Available!
• University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee has offered a $2,000 matching scholarship to up to two Wisconsin resident Spectrum recipients, and has offered Non-Resident Tuition Remission for up to four out-of-state Spectrum recipients.
