Preconference: Grassroots Library Advocacy: Creating Raving Fans

Description: Grassroots advocacy at City Hall and County Offices (plus voters and taxpayers) make the difference between a library that limps along and one that sprints. Many individuals know how to call and write electeds, but need help forming effective teams. Practice delivering key messages with your diverse team, and learn how to develop a comprehensive team. Working in small groups, you will develop My Own Action Plan to take back home. Speakers; Ellen Miller and Patricia Fisher.

Description: Please join ALA, ALTA and all the states of the nation in honoring the achievements of extraordinary library advocates. The 1st National Advocacy Honor Roll Banquet, held in 2000, honored 20th century library advocates. This second banquet will identify and celebrate the achievements of library advocates during the last five years, and in all 50 states. Because advocates come from many walks of life and contribute to libraries in very different ways, each state chooses its own honorees. Plan now to be part of this opportunity to call attention to library advocacy and to recognize those who have worked so hard on behalf of America’s libraries. Program: The Taste: Space Planning for Technology

Description: Libraries are rapidly evolving environments. Library administrators, staff and trustees need to maintain their currency in all areas of technology in libraries. This moderated panel discussion will discuss many issues related to space planning for technology. Our speakers are Peter Magniani, an architect from Queens Public Library, Nolan Lushington, a library consultant and library building plan writer, and Alan Kirk Grey, who is involved in library technology. The program will be moderated by Betsy Larson, an information scientist. Their deeply interrelated fields, and the perspectives they present will help attendees to define local concerns and develop tools to strategize for the future. Moderator: Betsy Larson. Program: SOS Luncheon: Twix and Tweens: Library Programs to Motivate our Youth

Description: The lost generation teens who are too young to be adults and too old to be children are the focus of this program. We will discuss how to motivate and market the library as a means of support, information, and fun for these young people between the ages of 12-19. Program: Guess Who’s Here?
