Día 2007

With more than 450 libraries in over 40 states participating and offering exciting events and activities from author and illustrator visits to storytelling under the stars, from kite making to papel picado paper crafting, the 2007 El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día) celebration was a great success. Día, held annually on April 30, celebrates books, language, and culture, and allows libraries the opportunity to demonstrate their value within the community as vibrant, cultural, and family-friendly institutions.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), national home of Día, and Target, official national sponsor of Día 2007, gave away 60,000 complimentary Día brochures, featuring recommended children’s books and tips for parents on reading to/with their children, and 60,000 bookmarks to more than 450 libraries that registered their Día event information online by April 16th. Even the U.S. Senate got into the act! Please click here for information about 2007 events.

In addition, ALSC and Target provided mini-grants of $5,000 plus a suite of Día-themed promotional materials to eight model public library systems, including El Paso (Texas) Public Library, Hennepin County (Minn.) Library, Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.), Queens (N.Y.) Public Library, Riverside County (Calif.) Library System, Broward County (Fla.) Library System, Providence (R.I.) Public Library, and Phoenix (Az.) Public Library. These "Super Sites" put grant funds towards purchasing culturally-relevant books for permanent collections or giveaways and/or to fund Día programs. Each Super Site also received a large display banner, bookplates, and bilingual Día brochures and bookmarks.

San Francisco’s Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros
San Francisco, California

Sunday, April 30
1:00 – 4:00 PM
Mission Dolores Park (Dolores Street @ 20th)

More than 800 Bay Area children and families will celebrate Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros (A Celebration of Children and Books) on Sunday, April 30th at Mission Dolores Park in San Francisco.  This annual event honors children and their families, and promotes literacy, language, and culture.

Free and open to the public, Día provides each child with the opportunity to see live performances, participate in high quality art activities, and leave with a book of their very own.

Día is a wonderful opportunity for families and the community to come together,” states Kerry Philip, Executive Director of the Mission Learning Center, and one of the event’s lead organizers. “This event honors home languages and cultures, and truly celebrates parents as an integral part of the literacy team.”

Aztec drumming with Danza Xitlalli kicks off a stellar stage show that includes the Tibetan Association of Northern California Children’s Performance Group and storytelling. Completing the performances will be the African Queens, who will have children on their feet, laughing, dancing, and singing.

Families can also participate in various activities, from cartooning with 826 Valencia to making a codex; a type of illustrated book made by the indigenous cultures of Latin America, with the Mexican Museum. Activities are provided by 826 Valencia; ArtSpan; Bay Area Discovery Museum; Childhood Matters, Inc (Nuestros Ninos Radio Show); Crissy Field Center; Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area; Jump Start; KQED; San Francisco Children’s Art Center; San Francisco Public Library; SCRAP-Scroungers’ Center for Reusable Art Parts; The Mexican Museum; and Zeum.

“Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros encourages a literature of inclusion,” states Ruth Tobar, Publisher and Executive Director of Children’s Book Press. “The children and families in attendance today inspire our books, and we hope these books in turn help give children a sense of their history, culture, and importance.”

San Francisco’s Día began in 1999, after the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution declaring April 30th as “El Día de los Niños – Celebrating Young Americans.” Since then, Día has grown dramatically, with events joining families in towns and cities across the country.

“We believe books have the power to change a child’s life,” says Tobar. “Día puts culturally relevant books in children’s hands and gives families the tools they need to help their children become lifelong learners and readers. It’s a joy-filled and powerful day.”

Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros – San Francisco is a collaboration of Bay Area nonprofits and community organizations that are committed to literacy and education. The following organizations have volunteered their time and services to make this event possible: ArtSpan, Bay Area Discover Museum, Children’s Book Press, Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area, KQED, Mission Learning Center, Nuestros Niños, San Francisco Public Library, and San Francisco State University’s Jumpstart Program.

Event sponsors include: Ashbury Children’s Foundation; Bill Graham Foundation; Department of Children, Youth, and Families; First 5 San Francisco; Latino Community Foundation; Target; and Wells Fargo.

The Palace of the Governors
Santa Fe, NM

Sunday, April 30, 2006 11 a.m.– 5 p.m.
A Lasting Impressions Event!
Join the Palace of the Governors in celebration of children here, there and everywhere. In collaboration with the New Mexico State Library, the Palace Education Department will celebrate children and the importance of literacy in their lives—and ours—with storytelling, books and book arts, a Poetry Slam, music and other festivities.

The Palace’s first Dia de Los Niños/Dia de Los Libros Poetry Slam uses contemporary music blended with contemporary concerns making up today’s spoken word by New Mexico’s Youth. The event encourages today’s high school and young college students to express themselves in the poetry world.

The main event for the day will be a Poetry Slam with special Guests Danny Solis, Joe Ray Sandoval and others. Students from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, Capital, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe High will compete. New Mexico’s “homegrown” poets will throw down and enlighten, bringing a smooth representation of New Mexico’s youth to the Palace of the Governors Courtyard.

Sandoval will lead a poetry workshop for the novice and perform as poet and DJ. For the younger children the Palace will hold a book walk as a way to provide young children with free books and promote literacy. Storytelling will take place throughout the event in the palace of the Governors Lasting Impressions Activity Room.

Sunday admission is free for New Mexico residents with I.D.; children 16 and younger are always free.
