Dr. Laura L. Summers is the Director of a NCATE accredited
School Library Program and an Assistant Professor at the University of
Colorado Denver where she works with 8 library leaders offering a
performance-based master’s program to over 100 school librarians on-line
and community-based. Prior to coming to CU, Laura coordinated the school
library program at the University of Northern Colorado where she was
nominated for Outstanding Service Provider Award and launched her first
online master's program. Laura worked for 13 years in public education
as a school librarian, teacher, induction coach, and professional
developer of online learning in the area of information literacy,
reading strategies, differentiation, data-driven assessment, and
mentorship. Two of her instructional programs were implemented
nation-wide. Laura enjoys writing professional articles and presenting
on instructional technology integration and culturally responsiveness
for 21st century librarians at conferences such as AASL, CASE, AECT,
AESA, and CAL. Laura served a year as Co-Editor for Colorado Library,
and currently serves on the Colorado Association of School Libraries
(CASL) and Colorado Power Library Board. STATEMENT:
As the ELMSS Chair-Elect, I would work with the executive
committee to promote and demonstrate library advocacy, public relations,
professional development, relevant research, and mentorship of school
librarians. My skills in communication, organization, leadership, and
collaborative planning would help me serve as an effective liaison
between the Executive Committee and AASL members while building trust
and support with school library students and library professionals. I
have now launched 2 online school library master’s/endorsement programs
so I could pursue an active role in the review and study of online
school library curricula as well as demonstrating effective online
teaching strategies based on my eleven experience designing and teaching
online instruction. As a professor, I also develop research activities
that focus on school library media education. Currently, I am
researching the instructional practices of culturally responsive school
librarians and how to promote our roles as 21st Century School
Librarians.
